Tuesday October 16 Day 4

Inquiry into Language:
Today students were asked to tell me what was needed in order to write a letter.

Students were then completed a cut and paste activity of the parts of a letter and envelope.

Math:
Today students reviewed bar graphs. We talked about what was needed to complete a bar graph. (Title, Scale, we need to use a ruler.) Students also learned what a vertical and horizontal axis is.
As a class we then worked on pg.106 in the students work books. We also discussed how we could describe the graphs we see and explain what the data is telling us.

Reflection:
Today we read the book,
As a class we talked about what it is like when people have to move to new countries. Students also shared with the class what their names meant and why their parents chose it for them.

Inquiry into Migration:
Today we started our inquiry into migration. Students were asked to think back to our story we read and think about what they think migration means. One student said that, "Migration is when animals move to another country when the weather get's to cold." Students were then told that we were going to focus on human migration. Students then said that, "Migration is when people move to different countries."
Students were given a Think, Pair Share graphic organizer and asked to write down the definition of migration and then write down where their families were from. Students then got into partners and talked about where their families were from and why they think that people migrate. Students shared with the class what they had talked about with their partners. Students thought that people migrated because of war, natural disasters, work, money, and safety.

Daily Five:
During this time we completed our KWL chart from our citizenship unit. As a class we talked about what we had learned and if students still had any questions.
