Day 5 Thursday October 25

Today students continued with their summative tasks. Some students presented it to the class.

Inquiry into Language:
Today students read the book,

Students then wrote a letter to the little pumpkin explaining to her how they would decorate her for halloween next week and where they would put her. Students are doing well with following the letter format and are making sure to add lots of detail.

Math:
Today we had a shorter math class because of picture day. We reviewed how to read a pictograph remembering what a key is and how to use it. Students then did some practice reading pictographs.

Today students continued to work on making their games.

Inquiry into Migration
Today students learned about Malak and her story. Students watched and listened to a quick video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1Ri4cQkAI8. Everyone had allot of questions about her story so we had a class discussion about what they had seen and heard in the video.

Students asked, Why did she not fly on a plane?, Why did the people throw her clothes off the ship?, Why did she have to leave her home?, Did she have enough food and water on the ship? Students were very reflective when talking about Malak's experience and showed allot of empathy for her. Student's had some more questions about how migration effects people so we watched another short video, http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/immigration/young_immigrants/vandi.htm. Students were shocked to hear that the boy in the video did not know his ABC's or how to count to ten when he was in grade 6 so we talked about how education is different all around the world and how fortunate they are to receive the education they do.
