Dear Oakwood and St. Jude’s Families,

We will be celebrating World Kindness Day on Wednesday, November 13th, 2019! Created in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, this unofficial holiday encourages people to spread happiness, joy, and peace through kindness. The Oakwood and St. Jude’s community will be creating a Kindness Rainbow around the school representing inclusiveness towards all students. Students will be able to purchase 3 paper chain links for $2 to write words of kindness or draw a picture on. They will return the links to be added to the Kindness Rainbow. All participating students will also be able to dress in casual clothes for the day! If you wish to participate in this event, please bring in $2.

The next Caribou Contest takes place on Wednesday, November 13th, 2019. Participants are to arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. Bring a charged device, preferably a laptop, iPad or Tablet. You have one hour to write the test.

This month’s test includes an interactive question. The interactive question will differ by grade: Tangram for Grades 2 to 4, Chomp for Grades 5 to 10, and finally a GeomeTree construction involving triangles for Grades 11/12.  You can practice these now on Caribou’s Games page. Let Caribou know if you have any problems with the games.
Caribou strongly recommends familiarizing yourselves with these games before the contest.  Because certain games pages can be used to solve the questions, these will be blocked from Tuesday morning, November 12
th
, (start of the contest in the far East) to Thursday evening, November 15th at 8 pm EST.
For Grades 3 to 12, there will be a history question about Emmy Noether. Students in these grades should read the relevant section of
Caribou’s History page in your preferred language to prepare.

Language:
Today students wrote their spelling words in their agendas. Students then completed their spelling workout books.

Please note that there are no spelling paragraphs this week so that students can have the time to focus on collecting information for their summative assignments.

Students also wrote down a random act of kindness that they will give out tomorrow. Students were told that it could be an action or something that they would say to someone.

Math:
Today students learned how to translate a figure on a grid. In our book it uses the word slide but we are going to use the word Translation to help us get ready for grade 3. Students practiced translating shapes vertically, horizontally, and diagonally.

Some students came up to the board to show us some examples.

We then completed pg. 138 as a class. When explaining how we know a figure has been translated we learned that both figures need to look exactly the same.

Students then completed pg. 139 on their own.

Christmas Concert :
We had time to practice our song for the Christmas Concert today. We will be preforming Jingle Bell Rock. Please make sure students are practicing both the lyrics and the actions at home.

UOI:
Today students were asked to pretend that they had to leave Canada and move to a different country. As a class we brainstormed some ideas about what they could write about.
