    Fine Art – Cultural Artifacts
In our current unit, we are learning about a range of cultures from around the world. For an in-class artwork assignment we want to use an artifact (from our own cultural background) and use our fine art skills to ‘draw what you can see’.
We kindly ask that your child brings in an artifact from their culture to sketch. This artifact should be able to comfortably fit on your child’s desk.
Artifacts can include but are not limited to the following:
    -       Mask
    -       Pottery
    -       Dolls/Figurines
    -       Coin
    -        Religious artifact (eg. icon)
    -       Jewelry
Please bring your artifact by Tuesday, January 14th.
Artifacts will be returned at the end of this unit in January.
    Many thanks,

    Ms. Hughes & Ms. Coldwells
Mr. Foster’s Farmers Market and Ms. Gandy’s Groceries

As part of their summative assessment the grade one classes have decided to open a market to complement their organization unit. The market will include fruits, vegetables, drinks and other healthy snacks. It will be held in rooms 12 and 18. The market will take place all day Thursday, January 23rd and Friday, January 24th. All profits made will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

Ex.

Math Review

Related facts - 2 addition and two subtraction needed
Ex.
6,4,10 = 6+4=10, 4+6=10, 10-6=4, 10-4=6

Standard Algorithm - standard procedure for adding and subtracting using carrying over and borrowing.

Adding using base ten
Step 1 – make your first number
Step 2 – make your second number
       Step 3 – add!
       *start at the ones
**do you have more than ten? Yes – trade in 10 ones for a 10 rod
*** do you have more than ten tens? Yes – trade in 10 ten rods for a 100 flat
Step 4 – write your answer

Subtracting using base ten
Step 1 – make your first number
Step 2 – take away your second number
       *start at the ones
**do you have enough ones? No – trade in a 10 for 10 ones
***do you have enough tens? No – trade in a 100 for 10 tens
Step 3 – write your answer

Estimating the sum using round- have them write it out next to the problem like below and add/subtract

   516---------500
+194---------200
_____         ______
 600 or 700    700

UOI:

Today students learned about the Zodiac signs. We read some information about them as a class.

Students then reflected on their Zodiac sign and what characteristics applied to them.

They also worked on a word search.
