Day 2 Wednesday November 7

Inquiry into Language:
Today students learned about writing an explanation. They learned that an explanation can be written to explain how something works or to explain how to do something.
We discussed that an explanation is normally written in paragraph form. We also said that an explanation needs to have a Introduction (a brief statement, question, or definition), Middle (the explanation), and End (a recommendation or a summary.)

Students then wrote an explanation in their journals explaining how to make a peanut butter and jam sandwich.

Math:
Today students learned about rotations. Students learned that a rotation is when you turn an object on a grid. Students learned that they can rotate an object clockwise or counter clockwise. Students also learned what a full, half, quarter, and three quarter turn looks like. To help students with their  understanding we used a clock. Students came up to the board and were asked to make a specific turn. For example, "Show me a three quarter turn clockwise." Students then had to move the ruler on the clock to complete the turn.

Students then completed pg.140-141 in their workbooks. Tomorrow we will do some more practice on rotating shapes on a grid.

Science Fair:
Today we tried our experiment again. We tried adding more baking soda (6 big spoons) and when we added the worms into the vinegar the cup over flowed with fizz and bubbles but the worms still did not float or dance. While we waited for the gummy worms to soak we started to write down our procedure.
Tomorrow we are going to try using hot water and soaking the gummy worms in the baking soda longer.

Library:
Today students had some time with Ms. Hayward at the Library. Ms. Hayward read them a book to get them ready for Kindness day next week and students had some time to exchange their books.

Day 1 November 6, 2018

Inquiry into Language:
Today students wrote their pre-assessment for their next OWA unit, Explanations. Students were asked to pretend they were building a robot. Students had to describe the robot, what it does, and how it works. Students had allot of fun with this writing prompt and are interested to see what we do next in this unit.

Math:
Students continued to learn how to Slide/Translate an object on a grid. We practiced identifying what is and is not a slide together on the board.

Then students completed pg. 282-283 in their textbooks.

Inquiry into Migration:
We took this time today to start our Science fair experiment. We are creating Frankenworms. Today We talked about the steps we needed take in order to complete the experiment. We then talked about what a Hypothesis was and made some of our own.
We then completed the experiment to see what would happen.

Unfortunately the worms did not float or dance today but the vinegar did get very fizzy when we placed the gummy worms in. As a class we discussed what we think we need to do tomorrow so that we can get our gummy worms to dance. Students decided that we need to put in 6-7 spoons of baking soda instead of the three spoons we used today. We will check in with you tomorrow to let you know what happened.

Day 6 Monday November 5

Inquiry into Language:
Today students wrote their spelling words into their agendas. Students then worked on pg. 38-40 in their spelling workbooks. This week students are working on identifying words that have the long u sound.

Math:
Today students learned how to slide/translate shapes on a grid. As a class we worked on pg. 138 in our workbooks. Some students came up to the board and moved the shapes on the grid to help us see whether the shape was slid or not. Then we worked on describing how we know the shape was slid. "I know that the shape was slid because the shapes look the same." "I know the shape was slid because the shape did not change its position."

Students then worked on pg. 139 on their own.

Inquiry into Migration

Today students took their research they did last week about the country they chose to immigrate to  and wrote a postcard to their moms and dads. They needed to tell their parents why they left Canada and if it was a push or pull factor and what type of push or pull factor it was. They then described their new life to their parents. They also drew a picture on the post card of somewhere in that country or the countries national flag. Next students will try to write their addresses.

Well done to these students who tried reciting the Guy Fawkes poem!

Day 5 Friday November 2, 2018

Inquiry into Language:
Today students wrote their spelling test.

Math:
Today students continued to practice moving on a grid. Students worked on pg. 278-279 #1,2,3,5 in their textbooks. Students practiced explaining the steps taken to get from one place to another. Students worked on writing exactly how many squares they were moving and in what direction. (up, down, left, right) Students also learned how to describe how they knew where to go. Ex:"I know because I went backwards. I know because I did the opposite of what they said."

Inquiry into Migration
Today students discussed what push and pull factors were. We specifically looked at Environmental, political, Economical and Social factors.  We watched a video to help us understand the push and pull factors of migration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nai-Rjg7QF4

We then read the scenarios out as a class and decided wether it was a push or pull factor.
Then we placed it into the Political, Social, Economical, or Environmental category.

We had to have a vote for some of them as some students thought they should be put into different categories.

Day 4 November 1, 2018

French:
Students dod not have french today because Mme Rawan was covering another class.  So we used this time to write our OWA's.
Inquiry into Language:
Today students wrote their OWA (Ontario Writing Assessment.) Students had to write a letter to a friend who was away sick. Students had to recount what they had learned so far at school. Students were told they could write about anything that has happened at school from September until now. As a class we briefly talked about some of thing we have done and learned. (Patterns on a 100's chart, graphing, letter writing, adjectives, verbs, nouns, Song Lee our novel study, Citizenship, Migration, house games, field trip, terry fox run,  Halloween.) Students were allowed to use their recount anchor chart and Letter Larry to help them. Students were also encouraged to look around the room at our other anchor charts to help trigger their memories.

Math:
Today students continued to learn how to move on a grid/map. We went outside for the first part of our lesson. Students used the squares on the playground to give their peers instructions on how to get to the other side. Students were reminded to tell their peers exactly how many squares they needed to move up, down, left, or right.

Students then practiced these skills on a worksheet.

Inquiry into Migration
Today students finished researching the country they chose to migrate to.

These are some of the things students made during recess today.
