Inquiry into Language

Today we read the story, Can I be your Dog? This was about a dog who wrote letters to people in his community asking them to adopt him. 

After reading the story students were asked to write a recount. We discussed what was required when writing and students were given this handout to help keep them on track while they were writing.

Math 

Today we reviewed how to round numbers focussing on how to round numbers to the nearest 100. Then students played some games to practice. We played Sit, Spin, Jump and BINGO. Students were given a rounding sheet to work on tonight for homework.

Inquiry into Wants and Needs:

After watching the videos we made a list of needs and wants. We also talked about some situations where we have to choose between things we want and things we need.

Students today continued working on practicing their cursive in their workbooks.

Day 2 September 24, 2018

Inquiry into Language

Students today wrote their spelling words in their agendas. Students were given 15 spelling words and 5 bonus words this week. Students are not required to write the 5 bonus words on Friday but are encouraged to try. 

When students were finished students worked on pages 14-16 in their spelling workbooks. 

Math 

Students today learned to show 1000 in different ways using pictures and base ten blocks. 

We learned how to show 1000 using base ten blocks together and then had to come up with a second way on our own. As a class we also solved the word problems on pg. 25. Students then worked on the remaining questions independently.

Library 

Students had their first visit to the Library today. Ms. Hayward talked to students about how Library time works. Students then had the opportunity to choose a book to sign out. Next week at the Library students will learn how to choose an appropriate book for their reading level. 

Inquiry into Language:

Today students completed their spelling test. Students did very well on them. 

Math:

Today students reviewed how to show numbers in different ways. Students practiced how to write numbers in standard form, represent numbers using base ten blocks. Students also reviewed how to write the base ten name for each number. We worked on pg. 22 as a class and did part of #2 on pg. 23.  The rest of the work students completed on their own.

Inquiry into Citizenship: 

Today Students finished working on their hand art. Students also finished the writing portion of this assignment.

Day 6 Thursday September 20, 2018

Inquiry into Language:

Today students reviewed what we need to write a proper sentence. Students also reviewed how to write a proper paragraph remembering to use their transition words First, Then, Next, and Lastly. They then had to write a journal entry about a time when they had to make an important decision. 

Students were given the prompt, "I needed to make an important decision when....."

Math: 

Today students learned about greater than and less than, also comparing and ordering numbers. 

We learned about the Hungry Hungry Alligator who loves to eat big numbers. 

As a class we worked on a few questions from pages 20&21 in the students workbook. Students then went on to finishing the rest on their own. 

Inquiry into Citizenship:  

Students today reviewed what a law is and why they are important. Students then got back into their groups and reviewed the law they created yesterday. Today they focussed on coming up with 4 good reasons why we should have this law in our classroom. Students then presented their laws to the class and they voted for the law they wanted to have in our classroom.

Daily five: 

Today we reviewed how to write the letter D on pg.10 of our cursive books. We reviewed the motions on the board together as a class. Students were also reminded that when writing that we never pick up our pencils. 

Day 5 Wednesday September 19

Inquiry into Language:

Today students reviewed what is needed in order to write a proper sentence. We reviewed this on the board. "When writing a sentence we need to make sure that our sentences start with a capital, end with a period. We need to make sure that we are spacing out our words and that the words we are using make sense together. "

After reviewing this students were given words that were cut into individual pieces. Students were put into groups of three and asked to create a sentence with the words they were given. Students then read out their sentences to the class. 

Math:

Today student's continued to work on patterns using a hundreds chart. Today they took it a step further and worked on extending patterns on a hundreds chart. Students worked with numbers from 200-1000. After completing the pattern rule students practiced describing the pattern. ( "Each time the numbers increase/decrease by........", "The pattern in the ones digits: 1,6,1,6...", "The pattern in the tens digits: 1,1,2,2,3,3..." )Students worked on pg. 18&19 in their workbooks. 

As a class students learned how to count on by 25's on a hundreds chart ( Count one group of ten make a mark, count another group of ten make a mark, then count a group of five and colour the last number.) 

Inquiry into Citizenship: 

Today Students learned about laws and why they are important. We watched a video about about what happens when their is no laws to follow. Here is the link, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOLJeOHF8G0. 

After watching the video we defined what a law is and came up with examples of laws we have in our community and at school. We then took it one step further and thought about what the consequences were for breaking the law. 

Students then got into groups of 3-4 and were told that they had to come up with their own law for our classroom and 4 good reasons why we should have this law. Tomorrow students will share their laws and will vote for the one they think we should have in our classroom.
